Katayama says Japan intervened in yen market on July 31 with U.S.
Coordinated intervention carried out
Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on the 3rd that she had issued a statement saying Japan conducted yen-buying intervention in coordination with the U.S. Treasury on July 31, U.S. Eastern Time. She said the move was aimed at addressing the yen's excessive volatility and disorderly moves seen recently.
Possible additional intervention signaled
Katayama also said she would not hesitate to carry out additional coordinated intervention. Coordinated intervention by Japan and the United States is extremely unusual except in times of crisis or disaster, and this was the first such move in 15 years, since shortly after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
