Japan, U.S. intervene to buy yen on July 31, first time in 15 years

Japan, U.S. buy yen in coordinated intervention on July 31

It was learned on the 2nd that the Japanese and U.S. governments carried out coordinated yen-buying intervention in the foreign exchange market on July 31. It was the first coordinated intervention in 15 years, since shortly after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Move to stem yen weakness

The yen had come close to 164 to the dollar in late July, around its weakest level in about 40 years. Japan and the United States were aligned in an effort to curb the yen's historic slide.

Government adjusts explanation

A Japanese government source confirmed the coordinated intervention. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama plans to explain a series of measures to correct the yen's weakness, including currency intervention, on the morning of the 3rd. The two countries are also coordinating toward issuing a joint statement.
