BYD July sales rise 22% as overseas demand lifts total

BYD July sales rise on overseas growth to 419,211 units

Overseas sales double

Chinese automaker BYD said on the 1st that its new vehicle sales in July rose 22% from a year earlier to 419,211 units. It was the third straight month of year-on-year growth and the highest level since January. A sharp increase in overseas sales lifted the total.

Domestic sales remain weak

In China, subsidies for purchases of new energy vehicles such as electric vehicles were revised in January, and BYD was also affected. Sales had fallen below the year-earlier level for eight straight months through April, but signs of recovery are now becoming clearer. Overseas passenger vehicle sales in July, including pickup trucks, more than doubled to 179,841 units.

Expanding abroad

Along with expanding its sales network in Europe and Southeast Asia, the company launched a new plug-in hybrid vehicle in Mexico in July. It also sought to boost sales in Japan, releasing its first kei car EV, Racco, on July 28. BYD's Japan unit said on the 31st that it received about 100 orders in the three days after launch. Although domestic sales in China fell below the level a year earlier, the company is stepping up efforts to restore growth by introducing the Tang, a large SUV EV, in mid-June and the Seagull 08, a new model offering both EV and plug-in hybrid versions, in early July. Cumulative new vehicle sales for January-July fell 11% from a year earlier to 2,227,722 units.
