M7.1 quake strikes Kumamoto; Uki and Hikawa hit by intensity 7

A quake measuring up to seismic intensity 7 struck Kumamoto Prefecture around 4:27 p.m. on the 28th. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was in the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture, and the focal depth was about 10 km. The magnitude was estimated at 7.1. The agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas.

Main intensities

This was the first time seismic intensity 7 had been observed in Japan since the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. In Kumamoto Prefecture, it was the first such observation since the Kumamoto earthquakes, which hit twice in quick succession in 2016. The main intensities were as follows.
