The company has drawn global attention for claiming performance close to the most advanced AI models in the United States, but usage has surged and it says it lacks the computing resources needed for processing.

Demand jumped over the past 48 hours

According to the company, user usage over the past 48 hours has far exceeded expectations, and the processing capacity of its server clusters is nearing its limit. In response, access will for now be limited to existing members. The company said it plans to gradually expand new sign-up slots once the necessary measures are in place, but gave no indication of when service would resume.

Securing GPUs remains a challenge

Servers equipped with graphics processing units, or GPUs, are essential for providing AI services. As usage expands, the company will need to add more semiconductors and servers. Moonshot AI is reviewing how it allocates resources, including separating servers for intensive coding tasks and other services.

Focus on Kimi K3

Moonshot AI says its new model, Kimi K3, has delivered performance second only to leading models from Anthropic and others. In China, procurement of high-performance semiconductors from Nvidia is restricted, and software technologies that use computing resources efficiently are seen as a source of competitiveness. Following the suspension of new sign-ups, some Chinese media said securing a certain amount of GPU capacity remains a growth challenge for China's AI industry.
