US service member killed in clash with Iran, Central Command says

US Central Command says one US troop killed on 18

US Central Command said on 19 that one US service member was killed on 18 in fighting with Iran. The deaths of US troops have now occurred on two consecutive days, with growing attention on the risk that the US military could launch major retaliation.

Killed while disposing of unexploded ordnance

According to US Central Command, the service member was killed while disposing of unexploded ordnance left behind after a drone launched by Iran was shot down in northern Iraq. Another soldier was also wounded. On 17, two US service members were killed in Jordan while intercepting missiles and drones from Iran.

Fears of wider retaliation

US President Donald Trump said on 4 June, before signing a memorandum with Iran on 17 June, that he would take 'immediate action' if Iran killed US troops. He had said that if US service members were killed, it would be a reason to resume fighting.

The US military attacked Iran for eight straight days through 18. US Central Command has stressed that the attacks are aimed at 'swift punishment of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps', and concern is rising that the two countries could again spiral into direct conflict.
