North America World Cup final pits Argentina against Spain

Argentina, Spain set for North America World Cup final

The final will be held at the New York-New Jersey Stadium from 3 p.m. on the 19th, or 4 a.m. on the 20th Japan time. If Argentina win, it will be their fourth title in two straight tournaments, making them only the third team to win back-to-back titles after Brazil in the 1958 and 1962 editions. If Spain win, it will be their second title since 2010.

Spain are in good shape

Although they drew 0-0 with debutants Cape Verde in their opening match, Spain have advanced smoothly through the roughly month-and-a-half-long tournament. Coach de la Fuente appears to have prepared the team by working back from the final date, and all four knockout-stage matches were settled within 90 minutes. Despite the long travel distances, they have kept fatigue to a minimum.

The team's core is in midfield. Rodri is an undisputed anchor, with Olmo, Ruiz, Pedri and Merino just ahead of him. De la Fuente has rotated his side according to form and match situation, while maintaining quality and intensity even as the personnel changed with substitutions. Forward Oyarzabal, who leads the team with five goals, says the side's strength lies in everyone pulling in the same direction and understanding what matters. There were signs in the semifinal that right winger Yamal was concerned about his foot, but the coach told a news conference: 'There is absolutely no problem and he is in perfect condition.' Rodri also says they need to stick to their own game and not be distracted by the opponent's mind games.

Argentina's strength

Argentina combine Messi's skill with the ruggedness of those around him. First-choice goalkeeper E. Martinez says many players grew up in poor families, and shared values have strengthened the team's bond. Most of the core squad were part of the World Cup-winning side in Qatar, including L. Martinez, Paredes and De Paul, as well as Fernandez, who has delivered in key moments.

For Spain, it is awkward to face Messi, who came through Barcelona's youth academy, on the opposing side. For Barca products such as Yamal, Pedri and Olmo, Messi is also a special figure. Messi himself laughs and says, 'Of course, I know them very well.' The clash between a captain who is still showing no signs of decline at 39 and Barca's current generation will be one of the highlights.

How the final could unfold

Argentina's supporters, who are expected to fill the stadium in the suburbs of New York, are another factor that could influence the flow of the match. If their loud singing disrupts Spain's precise passing game, it will work in Argentina's favor. In the semifinal against England, their linked-up play, with one player making the body contact and another nicking the ball away, stood out.

In the final, the referee could also be inclined to overlook rough play in an effort to avoid sending players off. Based on the past three matches, if a scrappy game combines with Messi's virtuosity, it is entirely possible that Argentina could overwhelm the European champions.
