AWS outage disrupts some PayPay functions, main services recover
Some functions suspended
PayPay said on the 16th that some payment services were unavailable. As of 5:30 p.m., some payment methods, money transfers and top-ups through the smartphone app could not be used. Most functions later recovered.
AWS outage blamed
The company said the cause was an outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States. By 6:30 p.m., main functions had recovered, but some in-app services and the website remained difficult to access, and a full recovery had not yet been achieved.
Users top 70 million
PayPay has more than 70 million users, and its use has expanded mainly for person-to-person transfers and small payments. It can now also be used for expensive purchases, making it a major cashless payment method alongside credit cards. To prepare for outages, the company has introduced offline payments, which allow transactions of up to 50,000 yen each even when the internet is unavailable.
