USTR imposes 25% extra tariffs on some imports from Brazil
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said on the 15th it would impose an additional 25% tariff on some items imported from Brazil. The measure, based on Section 301 of the Trade Act, will take effect in the early hours of the 22nd.
Sanctions over unfair practices
Secretary of State Rubio said on X, formerly Twitter, that the move was because President Lula had not engaged in talks with the United States in good faith. USTR representative Greer said Brazil's unfair trade practices had prevented U.S. workers and producers from accessing the market. He said the additional tariffs were necessary to ensure they can compete on a level playing field.
