Nearly 19,000 construction documents suspected leaked at Kudankulam plant
How the leak suspicion emerged
At the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu state in southern India, it was found that nearly 19,000 files may have been leaked in a cyberattack. The breach was said to have come to light after the hacker group World Leaks posted confidential files on the dark web, and the plant may have been hit by ransomware.
Construction documents included
The leaked data is believed to have been stolen from a group company of Indian conglomerate Reliance Group, which is a contractor for the nuclear plant's construction. The company reportedly told the government that its data had been partially compromised. The documents included design drawings for units 3 and 4 under construction, control room layouts and inspection records.
Safety impact denied
The Nuclear Power Corporation said the released information was unrelated to nuclear safety or nuclear security systems. However, there are also concerns that even if the reactor systems themselves are not compromised, attackers could pose a serious security risk if they learn the facility's operating processes. In 2019, malware was also reported to have been detected on a computer used for administrative work at the Kudankulam plant.
