World Cup: England beat Norway in extra time
England beat Norway in extra time to reach semi-finals
The World Cup in North and Central America held its quarter-finals on the tournament's 30th day on the 11th, local time on the 12th, in Miami and other venues. England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time to reach the semi-finals for the first time in two tournaments. Defending champions Argentina will face Switzerland.
Bellingham scores twice
It was a tightly contested 120 minutes, with both sides attacking while keeping possession, but England won it with two goals from Bellingham. In the 36th minute, Norway took the lead when a shot-like cross from Schjelderup from the left flew straight into the net. England levelled in first-half stoppage time when Bellingham, who received a pass in the centre from the left, scored with a shot.
The second half produced no goals and the match went into extra time. In the 93rd minute, Bellingham put in the rebound after Rogers, a substitute, had seen his mid-range shot parried, putting England ahead.
Argentina face Switzerland
Argentina and Switzerland also met in the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. With the score still 0-0 and the match seemingly heading to a penalty shootout, Di Maria scored the winner near the end of extra time to give Argentina victory. Switzerland also created chances until the end, and it was a close match. Argentina later went on to the final, where it lost to Germany.
This time, Argentina are aiming to reach the semi-finals for a second straight tournament, while Switzerland are targeting a first-ever place in the last four. As of June 11, Argentina were ranked No. 1 and Switzerland No. 19 in the FIFA rankings, but even the defending champions are unlikely to have an easy match.
