Trump says Iran requested talks to continue, stresses ceasefire has ended

Trump says Iran talks can resume as ceasefire ends

Trump says Iran requested talks to continue

U.S. President Donald Trump said on social media on the 10th that Iran had requested continued dialogue and that the United States had agreed. He also stressed, 'I made it clear to them that the ceasefire is over,' suggesting the possibility of resuming talks while leaving room for military action.

How the attacks unfolded

The United States and Iran had been aiming for a final agreement in line with a memorandum signed in June to end hostilities. They had agreed to resume negotiations after the funeral of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but both sides exchanged attacks on July 7 and 8.

Iran claimed control of the Strait of Hormuz and attacked vessels sailing through the southern route near the coast of Oman. In response, U.S. Central Command carried out strikes targeting Iranian small boats and military facilities.

The outlook for talks

At a news conference on the 8th, Trump said he was cautious about a full resumption of fighting, but warned that if Iran attacked merchant ships, the United States would 'hit back with 10 times the force.'

The pressure of military force is seen as a way to compel concessions, but the gap over control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear issue is still thought to be wide. The U.S. news site Axios reported a view that factions within the Iranian leadership opposed to the memorandum had started the attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. Mediators including Qatar and Pakistan are working to ease tensions between the United States and Iran.
