Dow Falls More Than 850 Points After Trump Remarks on US-Iran Ceasefire
US stocks were led lower on the 8th after remarks by US President Donald Trump on the US-Iran situation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average extended a sharp selloff, with losses at one point topping 850 points.
Risk-off selling intensifies
At around 12 p.m. Eastern time, or 1 a.m. Japan time, the Dow was down about 850 points from the previous day at around 52,000. Trump said he thought the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran was 'over,' making investors less willing to take risk.
Higher oil sends related stocks lower
The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also fell. Among S&P 500 sector indexes, declines in 'materials' and 'consumer discretionary' stood out.
Trump said he would carry out 'powerful attacks against Iran tonight,' sending oil prices sharply higher. The front-month August WTI crude contract, the US benchmark, briefly rose to the mid-$75 per barrel range, its highest level in two weeks.
Stocks seen as likely to be weighed down by higher energy costs also sold off. Among Dow components, Sherwin-Williams, Home Depot and McDonald's fell.
