Trump says Iran ceasefire is over, voices frustration with talks
Trump says ceasefire is over
US President Donald Trump said on the 8th that the ceasefire with Iran was 'already over', expressing frustration with the outlook for talks. He intensified criticism of Iran, saying, 'It's a waste of time dealing with liars' and 'They are crazy.'
Talks grow less certain after US military retaliation
US Central Command said on the 7th that it had attacked Iranian military facilities in retaliation for Iran's attack on commercial ships sailing in the Strait of Hormuz. The path of talks based on the memorandum of understanding reached by the US and Iran in June aimed at ending the fighting has become even harder to predict.
Strong dissatisfaction also at NATO meeting
When Trump met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Turkey, where he was visiting, reporters asked him about the ceasefire and whether the memorandum had expired. 'That's a very interesting question to me. I think it's over. I don't want to be involved with them,' he replied.
He again criticized Iran, saying, 'They are deranged. They are a vicious and violent group,' and claimed that 'they were supposed to have agreed not to have nuclear weapons, but they go out and tell the media 'we never said that' and things like that.' The US and Iran had indicated they intended to resume talks after the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, but Trump said, 'We can talk, but I think it's a waste of time,' signaling a negative view of continuing negotiations.
