Khamenei funeral continues in Tehran; crowds pay respects, procession set for June 6
Funeral enters second day in Tehran
The funeral of Iran's former supreme leader Ali Khamenei entered its second day of events in the capital Tehran on the 5th. President Pezeshkian, parliament speaker Ghalibaf and others attended, and many members of the public visited the venue, as they did on the first day.
Growing anger toward the U.S. and Israel
Khamenei and his relatives' coffins were placed at the Grand Mosalla, a massive mosque complex partly under construction. At the venue, in addition to the Iranian flag, many people waved red flags calling for retaliation against the United States and Israel, and shouted such slogans as 'revenge'. Tasnim News, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the red color symbolises blood shed unjustly, among other things.
Upcoming schedule and overseas condolences
Mourners dressed in black remembered the deceased while striking their chests. According to attendees, the gesture means placing the deceased above one's own heart. A large funeral procession will be held in Tehran on the 6th, memorial events will be held in Qom in central Iran on the 7th and in Iraq on the 8th, and burial is scheduled for the 9th in Mashhad, his hometown in northeastern Iran.
On the 3rd, ahead of the public farewell rites that began on the 4th, foreign delegations including Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's deputy chairman of the Security Council and former president, paid their respects. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said on his social media account on the 4th that more than 70 countries had attended.
