Trump Says US Strength on Display in Declaration Bicentennial Speech

Trump Hails US Strength at 250th Anniversary Event

US President Donald Trump said on the 4th, in a speech at a commemorative ceremony marking the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, that 'there is no goal Americans cannot overcome.' He also referred to the strong stock market and said it was 'only the beginning of the golden age of America.'

Founding Principles Emphasized

Trump stressed that the country had overthrown dictators, eradicated evil and defended freedom. He invited to the podium a veteran who had witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II and later served as a bomber pilot in attacks on Japan, introducing him himself.

He also said that 'it was no accident of history that we rose to become the strongest and most powerful nation in the world,' underscoring his focus on building up the US military. He also mentioned Venezuela and Iran, saying, 'We devastated them, their militaries.'

Warning Against the Left

Mindful of the left wing gaining influence within the opposition Democratic Party, he argued that 'there is no need for communism in our country.' Referring to post-World War II US history, when Washington rejected Soviet communism during the Cold War, he warned that 'that threat must never again rear its ugly head in the United States.'

July 4 marks the day in 1776 when the 13 colonies on the US East Coast rebelled against British rule and formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. The 13 colonies won the War of Independence against British forces, and the US Constitution took effect in 1788. George Washington became the first president the following year.

The US marks July 4 as Independence Day, viewing it as the day it declared itself an independent nation that values freedom and equality, free from British oppression. Successive presidents have used the day to restate the founding principles. In a bicentennial speech in 1976, President Ford said that 'freedom is not a piece of ashes to be worshipped, but a living flame to be kept burning,' while in 1926 President Coolidge referred to the importance of equality, freedom and human rights.

Trump also referred to freedom and equality in his speech, saying, 'We have fought, bled and given our lives to expand those rights to citizens of every race, religion, skin color and creed, because we are one people and one family.'

The ceremony also reflected deep divisions in the US. After taking office for a second term, Trump launched an organization to run the anniversary events, separate from the bipartisan commission established by Congress under the Obama administration. At an event hosted by that group in June, prominent artists declined to perform, citing its strong political overtones.
