Egypt, Argentina and Colombia Advance to World Cup Last 16

Egypt Reach Last 16 for First Time; Argentina Advance in Extra Time

In the first round of the knockout stage at the North and Central American World Cup on the 3rd, held in Dallas and other venues on the 4th Japan time, Egypt, Argentina and Colombia advanced to the second round. Egypt beat Australia in a penalty shootout to reach the last 16 for the first time. Argentina defeated debutants Cabo Verde 3-2 in extra time to move closer to a second straight title.

Egypt Win on Penalties

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute when Ashour met a cross from the right with a header after a free kick won on the left side of the penalty area. Australia levelled in the 55th minute when a cross from a free kick on the left led to an own goal by Egypt. The match went to penalties at 1-1, and two Australia players failed from the spot. Egypt converted all four of their kicks to secure victory.

Messi Keeps Scoring

Argentina went ahead in the 29th minute when Messi, reacting to a long pass from the back, controlled the ball calmly in front of the opposing goalkeeper and scored immediately. Cabo Verde drew level in the 59th minute when D. Duarte broke down the right and scored from a tight angle. Argentina regained the lead from a corner in extra time, but Cabo Verde levelled again through Lopez Cabral's mid-range shot. In the 111th minute, Romero headed in Messi's corner from the left to settle a thrilling contest. Messi has now scored in eight consecutive World Cup matches since the previous tournament, taking his career total to 20.

Colombia Advance 1-0

Colombia took the lead in the 14th minute when J. Aries met Suarez's cross after he carried the ball deep down the right. They could not add another goal, but maintained control throughout the match. Ghana, who tightened up defensively, pushed forward in the second half, but created few chances that seriously threatened Colombia's goal.
