ECB Chief Lagarde Hints at Early Exit Over French Election Debate
Presidential Election and Europe’s Role
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said she may leave before the end of her term in October 2027 and take part in discussions over the French presidential election, according to an interview with French business daily Les Echos.
Asked whether she could step down mid-term to join the debate surrounding France's presidential race, Lagarde said, 'It is possible. There is a need to bring a European voice to the presidential debate.'
She also said of French politics that 'if the presidential debate were to make France's position within Europe more limited, it may be necessary to explain that this is a painful path for the country.' On a possible run or backing a specific candidate, she said 'that is not on the agenda at this stage.'
Term Runs Through End-October 2027
Lagarde's term as ECB president runs until the end of October 2027, and France is due to hold a presidential election next spring. The French-born Lagarde has led the ECB since 2019.
Speculation about an early departure has long swirled around her. At a time when oil prices were surging on Middle East tensions and inflation was accelerating, she dismissed the speculation, saying she would not 'leave the ship like a captain abandoning a vessel.'
