Wang Yi holds call with Rubio, urges caution on Taiwan
Concerns over Taiwan issue
China's top diplomat Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party's Politburo, held a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on June 30 and urged the U.S. side to handle the Taiwan issue with caution, China's foreign ministry said on July 1.
Wang said that if one part is moved, the whole will be affected, and told Rubio that he hoped the U.S. would handle Taiwan-related matters with extreme caution. In June, Rubio said he was reviewing additional arms sales worth up to $14 billion to Taiwan.
Building a strategic stable relationship
Wang also stressed that building a constructive strategic stable relationship, which the two countries' leaders agreed on during their May meeting, is tied to the fundamental interests of China and the U.S. He called on both sides to remove disruptions, overcome obstacles and move resolutely in the right direction.
He added that building such a relationship is not just a slogan, but requires action and long-term commitment. He said both sides must expand the list of cooperation, shrink the list of problems and manage various risks.
