Strait of Hormuz Fully Open, Trump Says as Iran Hints at Reclosure

Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Fully Open as Iran Signals Reclosure

Status of the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on the 22nd that the Strait of Hormuz was 'completely open.' Iran had said on the 20th that it planned to close the strait again after the situation in Lebanon worsened.

Key points in talks

Trump stressed that in talks aimed at ending the fighting with Iran, keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and ending Iran's nuclear development were important. He did not mention halting Iran's ballistic missile development program or stopping funding for Iran-backed proxies in the Middle East.

More than 400 large tankers waiting

The Financial Times (FT) reported on the 22nd, based on an analysis of satellite data, that more than 400 large tankers waiting for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz were anchored on the eastern side of the strait.

After the signing of a memorandum aimed at ending the fighting between the U.S. and Iran, vessels passing through the strait had shown signs of increasing. According to the FT, no large vessels were confirmed to have passed through the strait on the 21st, the day after Iran declared it would close it again.
