Japan issues tsunami advisory after Philippines-area quake, waves seen up to 1 m
Earthquake strikes near the Philippines
A powerful earthquake struck near the Philippines at around 8:38 a.m. on the 8th. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was estimated at magnitude 8.2. The agency issued a tsunami advisory in the morning for a wide area centered on Pacific coastal regions from Ibaraki Prefecture to Okinawa Prefecture.
Tsunami waves forecast at up to 1 meter
The expected tsunami height is up to 1 meter. Estimated arrival times are 11 a.m. for the Miyakojima and Yaeyama regions of Okinawa Prefecture, 12:30 p.m. for Wakayama Prefecture and 1:30 p.m. for Ibaraki Prefecture, among others. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged people not to enter the sea or approach the coast until the tsunami advisory is lifted.
Government sets up information liaison office
Later the same day, the government established an information liaison office at the Prime Minister's Office crisis management center.
