Israel, Iran Trade Attacks as April Truce Wavers

Israel, Iran Trade Blows as April Truce Falters

Developments in Lebanon Trigger Tensions

Israel and Iran have resumed trading attacks as US President Donald Trump presses both sides to avoid widening the fighting, while the temporary truce agreed in early April is entering a precarious phase.

Iran carried out missile attacks on Israel on the 7th, its first since the April truce, and continued firing into the morning of the 8th. According to Iranian media, the Revolutionary Guard said it had targeted Israeli air bases and described the strikes as 'a warning'. It also warned that if Israel keeps attacking Lebanon, it will expand the scope of its retaliation.

Lebanon was the trigger. On the 7th, Israel carried out an air strike on the headquarters of the pro-Iranian group Hezbollah in Beirut. Iran retaliated on the view that the temporary truce with the United States also covered the Lebanese front. On the 8th, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghaei said the United States bears responsibility for violating the truce and that Israel's military operations cannot be separated from US policy.

Rising Fears of Spillover Across the Region

The Israeli military said early on the 8th that it had struck multiple military targets in central and western Iran. Iranian state television reported explosions in the capital Tehran, the western city of Tabriz and the central city of Isfahan. Israel's ambassador to the United States, Leiter, posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Israel had attacked Iranian missile bases and said non-energy infrastructure facilities were also targeted. The Israeli military also struck a petrochemical facility in the southwest on the morning of the 8th. Iranian state television said the facility was partially damaged, but no damage to nuclear facilities has been confirmed so far.

The Israeli government held a security cabinet meeting on the 8th, with Prime Minister Netanyahu and others discussing future steps, Israeli media reported.

Concern is also growing that the fighting could spread across the surrounding region. Yemen's pro-Iranian armed group the Houthis said on the 8th that it had attacked the area south of Israel's commercial hub Tel Aviv and also declared a ban on Israeli ships sailing through the Red Sea. Iran has warned it could shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the exit to the Red Sea, in the military confrontation with the United States and Israel that began in late February. Because the chokepoint also serves as a route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, if even ships other than Israeli vessels are unable to sail through it, global energy supplies could be hit.

US Calls for Restraint on Both Israel and Iran

Trump is pressuring Israel not to widen the fighting. In an interview with Britain's Financial Times on the 7th, he said 'he [Netanyahu] has no choice', suggesting that Israel would have no option but to accept a deal aimed at ending the fighting between the United States and Iran. According to US news site Axios, Trump spoke by phone with Netanyahu on the 7th and asked him not to attack Iran. Netanyahu is said to have effectively agreed to the call for restraint.

Trump also urged Iran, saying 'You fired missiles. That's enough. Go back to the negotiating table,' in remarks to Fox News.

The United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran in late February. Iran retaliated, and the clash developed into a large-scale military confrontation. With mediation from Pakistan, the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary truce in April and have been pursuing talks to end the fighting, but sporadic attacks between the two countries have continued.
