China steps up patrols in waters east of Taiwan
Maritime traffic oversight stepped up
China's Ministry of Transport carried out special enforcement against maritime traffic in waters east of Taiwan on the 6th. It said the move was a countermeasure to Japan and the Philippine governments' agreement in May to begin talks on delimiting maritime boundaries. Xinhua reported this.
Coast Guard also patrolled on the 1st
In addition to the maritime authorities in Fujian and Guangdong provinces, which border Taiwan, China's Coast Guard, responsible for maritime security, also conducted a patrol in waters east of Taiwan on the 1st. Both said the actions were in response to the Japan-Philippines agreement to start negotiations and urged the immediate halt of illegal acts that infringe on China's sovereignty and interests.
Japan and the Philippines to discuss EEZ boundaries
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos agreed in a meeting on May 28 to begin negotiations to delimit the maritime boundaries of their exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and continental shelves. The EEZs of the two countries are believed to partially overlap in waters east of Taiwan.
