Israeli military reports missile attack from Iran, first since ceasefire
Attack from Iran confirmed
The Israeli military said on the 7th that it had come under multiple missile attacks from Iran. According to the military, all of the missiles were intercepted. Sirens sounded across Israel, and civilians were instructed to take shelter.
Retaliation for Beirut strike?
The Israeli military had attacked the headquarters of the pro-Iran group Hezbollah in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, on the same day. It was the first attack from Iran on Israel since the temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran took effect in April, and there is a possibility it was retaliatory.
U.S.-Iran talks stall
According to Iranian media, the Revolutionary Guards issued a statement on the 7th saying, 'This attack is a warning.' They claimed the scope of retaliation would expand if Israel's attacks on Lebanon continued.
Iran is seeking a ceasefire in Lebanon as a condition for ending hostilities with the United States. The U.S. State Department announced a ceasefire on the 3rd, but actual fighting has continued. Hezbollah leader Qassem also said he would 'continue the resistance,' and U.S.-Iran negotiations have stalled.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Fox News on the 7th, in remarks directed at Iran, 'You fired missiles. That's enough already. Go back to the negotiating table.' He also told the U.S. news site Axios that he would ask Netanyahu not to take retaliatory measures.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi held phone talks on the 7th with Pakistan's Army Chief Munir, who serves as a mediator in talks with the United States, and Turkey's Foreign Minister Fidan, among others. They are believed to have discussed how to respond to the attack on Israel.
