U.S. Central Command intercepts missiles, drones from Iran

U.S. Central Command intercepts Iran missiles, drones

U.S. Central Command said on the 5th that it intercepted ballistic missiles Iran fired toward Kuwait and Bahrain. It also shot down attack drones in the Strait of Hormuz and struck coastal surveillance radar facilities on Kharg Island and Qeshm Island in the Gulf.

Seven missiles confirmed

According to the U.S. military, Iran fired seven ballistic missiles hours after the drones were shot down. Six were intercepted, while the remaining one did not reach its target. There were no U.S. casualties, it said.

Tensions persist over ceasefire

U.S. Central Command said on X, formerly Twitter, that the attack drones posed a direct threat to regional maritime traffic, and stressed that 'U.S. forces remain on alert to respond to Iran's unlawful use of force in self-defense.'

Talks between the United States and Iran on ending the fighting have stalled, and military tensions have risen further. The United States is limiting its attacks to what it calls 'self-defense measures' and is watching closely to maintain the ceasefire with Iran that began in April.

On the same day, U.S. Central Command denied Iran's claim that a U.S. warship came under warning fire in the Gulf of Oman, saying, 'Iranian forces did not attack or fire on the United States.' It said any firing on a U.S. warship would be 'a serious violation of the ceasefire,' but added that there has been no ceasefire breach at this stage, and that 'U.S. forces continue to operate freely while fully enforcing the maritime blockade.'

Axios reported on the 5th that Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy handling talks to end the fighting, and others visited a Department of Energy-related facility in southern Tennessee on the 4th. Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied them and discussed matters with nuclear technology experts, it said.

This is seen as preparation for nuclear talks aimed at the post-war period with Iran. Trump said in an interview with ABC News on the 2nd that 'we can reach an agreement within the next week,' expressing eagerness for an early deal, but no concrete progress had been confirmed by the 5th.

In an interview with CBS Television on the 5th, Trump said, 'Iran still has capabilities and still possesses a certain amount of missiles and drones.' While claiming that Iran's military power had been 'completely destroyed,' he also acknowledged that some of its offensive capabilities remain.
