Iranian State Broadcaster Reports Attack on US Warship in Gulf of Oman
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported on the 3rd that the Iranian navy attacked a US warship in the Gulf of Oman after it tried to approach Iranian territorial waters. It also released video purporting to show a missile launch.
US denies claim as exchanges continue
US Central Command responded on social media the same day, saying, 'Iran is lying. US naval vessels continue to sail safely.' IRIB, meanwhile, said there had been hostile acts by US forces against an Iranian merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman and claimed the US warship was in the chain of command.
Ceasefire talks and attacks in the region
The United States and Iran remain deadlocked over nuclear development and the Strait of Hormuz, with talks aimed at ending the fighting stalled. Amid this, US Central Command said on the 2nd that all attempts had failed in connection with an attack by Iran's Revolutionary Guards on the US Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. According to Iranian media, the Revolutionary Guards launched missiles and drones in retaliation.
Kuwaiti authorities said on the 3rd that Iran had attacked the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport with a drone, destroying part of the building. Several people were injured, and one person was killed in attacks on the airport and elsewhere, according to the Kuwaiti foreign ministry.
US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on the 3rd that he intended to continue talks aimed at ending the fighting with Iran. 'With another two or three weeks, it would be possible to wipe them out completely, but I do not want to do that. If we can reach an agreement that achieves the same result without killing people, that is what I want,' he said.
