Typhoon No. 6 to approach Okinawa, with heavy rain and storm warnings for western and eastern Japan
Typhoon No. 6 moved north just south of Naha on the 1st. It is expected to strengthen as it heads north and approach Okinawa and the Amami region with storm-force winds. Under the influence of the typhoon and a front, very heavy rain may fall intermittently in the Nansei Islands, western Japan and eastern Japan.
Alert for heavy rain and storm-force winds
The Japan Meteorological Agency urged caution, saying it may issue 'Level 4 emergency warnings' in various areas, calling for all people to evacuate from dangerous places. After approaching Okinawa and Amami, the typhoon is expected to shift its track further east and come close to western and eastern Japan through around the 3rd. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways said the impact on operations will be significant, with flight cancellations piling up, mainly on routes to and from Okinawa.
Heavy rain and high waves across a wide area
The agency called for vigilance against storm-force winds, high waves with swells, landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and rising river levels in the Nansei Islands through the 2nd, in western Japan from the 2nd to the 3rd, and on the Pacific side of eastern Japan through the 3rd. Forecast 24-hour rainfall through 6 a.m. on the 2nd is up to 300 millimeters in Okinawa and southern Kyushu/Amami, 100 millimeters in the Chugoku region and northern Kyushu, and 80 millimeters in Shikoku. In the 24 hours through 6 a.m. on the 3rd, it expects 400 millimeters in Tokai, 300 millimeters in Shikoku, southern Kyushu/Amami and Kinki, 200 millimeters in northern Kyushu, 100 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin and 80 millimeters in Chugoku.
Storm-force winds expand over Okinawa
The forecast maximum wind speed on the 1st is 35 meters per second in Okinawa, with gusts of up to 50 meters per second. Southern Kyushu/Amami is expected to see maximum winds of 30 meters per second and gusts of 45 meters per second. Wave heights are forecast at 10 meters in Okinawa and 9 meters in Amami, both with swells. As of 9 a.m. on the 1st, Typhoon No. 6 was moving north at 15 kph about 210 kilometers south of Naha. Its central pressure was 975 hectopascals, with maximum sustained winds near the center of 30 meters per second and maximum gusts of 45 meters per second. The area within 185 kilometers east of the center and within 150 kilometers west of the center is a storm zone with winds of at least 25 meters per second.
