Trump presses for explicit uranium disposal terms as truce plan is revised

Trump seeks explicit uranium disposal terms in Iran truce plan

Trump asks for disposal method to be added to deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has asked for specific language on the disposal of highly enriched uranium to be added to a proposed agreement aimed at ending the fighting with Iran, U.S. news site Axios reported on the 30th. He is said to be waiting for Iran's response.

Nuclear wording revised

On the 29th, Trump held a roughly two-hour meeting at the White House to discuss the response. Before the meeting, he had hinted at accepting the agreement, but he did not reveal a conclusion after it ended.

The proposal includes talks over a 60-day period on how to dispose of highly enriched uranium, among other issues. By including the phrase that 'Iran will not seek nuclear weapons' and making it a continuing negotiation, both sides were seen as having moved closer together.

Trump said on the 29th on social media that the United States would dig up enriched uranium buried inside Iran and 'destroy it in close coordination with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).' He is believed to be seeking to have such wording reflected in the agreement text. He remained silent on his response on the 30th as well.

Central Command says it fired after warnings in the Gulf of Oman

Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command said on the 30th that it had stopped a Gambia-flagged vessel headed for an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman on the 29th. As the United States continues blockade measures against vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports, it said it has rendered five ships unable to sail and turned back 116 vessels so far.

It said missiles were fired into the ship's engine room because the vessel did not comply with more than 20 warnings from the U.S. military.
