More Artists Pull Out of US 250th Anniversary Events; Trump Criticises Performers
Artists are increasingly pulling out of a concert planned as part of 'Freedom 250', an event marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. With explanations emerging that there had been a mismatch in views over the event's political positioning, President Trump on the 30th sharply criticised the performers on social media.
Venue Is the National Mall
The concert is scheduled to be held from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall, the green space facing the US Capitol in Washington. As the first round of performers, nine acts had been announced, including popular country singer Martina McBride.
Wave of Withdrawals Grows
One of the performers, rapper Young MC, posted on Instagram that he had not been told there was any political involvement. He said organisers were stressing their nonpartisan stance, but pointed out that the event was being reported as one backed by Trump.
Funk band The Commodores also pulled out, saying they had no intention of aligning with any particular political party. More than half of the announced performers have now withdrawn, including Brett Michaels of the rock band Poison.
Trump Pushes Back on Social Media
On social media, Trump called the performers 'third-rate artists' receiving large fees. He also posted that he drew bigger crowds than Elvis Presley in his prime without a guitar, and that he is said to be the greatest president in history, adding that he intended to speak instead.
