Putin says origin of Romania drone crash cannot be confirmed
Putin says origin awaits investigation
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the 29th that he could not confirm the origin of a drone after the Romanian government said a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle had crashed in the country’s east, leaving people injured, until an investigation was carried out. He spoke at a news conference after a summit of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Alert grows in NATO territory
The Romanian government said on the 29th that a Russian drone crashed in the country’s east, injuring two people. It is believed to be the first time civilians have been injured in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member state, further heightening concern in Europe over the Russian threat.
He also addresses Armenia’s path
Putin said Russia would also take part in an investigation if objective data were presented about the drone crash. He also said that if Armenia, which is seeking European Union (EU) membership, leaves the EAEU, it would lose preferential treatment and face higher energy prices, stressing that it would suffer an economic blow.
Joint statement calls for referendum
After the summit, the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan issued a joint statement in their names, calling for an early referendum on whether Armenia should join the EU or remain in the EAEU. They also said they would discuss the possibility of suspending Armenia’s membership at an EAEU meeting in December 2026.
