A shooting took place near the White House in Washington on the 23rd. The U.S. Secret Service said officers responded with gunfire after the suspect pulled a gun from a bag and began shooting, and the suspect died.

U.S. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time. An ABC News reporter who was at the White House said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that 'I heard what sounded like dozens of gunshots.'

The scene was on a street on the northwest side of the White House, and one passerby who witnessed the incident was also hurt in the shooting. It is a place visited by tourists on weekends and is close to the White House.

According to the Secret Service, the person who opened fire was taken to hospital, where death was confirmed. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. and had no major impact on Trump's duties.

Background to Heightened Security

About a month earlier, on April 25, a shooting also took place at a dinner hosted by the White House Correspondents' Association involving Trump. The suspect is said to have been aiming to assassinate senior administration officials including Trump.

Trump himself was wounded in the ear after being shot during a campaign speech in July 2024. In September 2024, he was targeted with a gun while playing at a golf course. In September 2025, Charlie Kirk, a conservative young activist who helped drive his reelection, was shot dead while speaking at a university.
