Nimitz strike group heads to Caribbean as US pressures Cuba
The US military on the 20th said it would deploy the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Nimitz to the Caribbean. The Trump administration is seeking regime change in Cuba and is stepping up military intimidation.
Nimitz expected to stay in waters for several days
US Southern Command on the 20th posted on social media, 'Welcome to the Caribbean, Nimitz carrier strike group.' Nimitz and its escorts are expected to remain in the Caribbean for at least several days.
Justice Department indicts six
The US Justice Department said on the 20th that a federal grand jury in southern Florida had indicted six people including Raul Castro, 94, Cuba's former president of the Council of State, on murder charges and other counts. The case stems from Cuba's downing of a US civilian aircraft in 1996.
In a January strike on Venezuela, the Trump administration cited a US Justice Department indictment as grounds to detain President Maduro. It is combining military pressure with legal action to intensify pressure on the other country.
