Iran talks in final stage, Trump signals possible renewed strikes
On talks aimed at easing the US-Iran confrontation, US President Donald Trump said on the 20th that they were in the final stage. He also renewed his warning of possible further strikes if Iran's response is not sufficient, saying he would resort to a 'slightly troublesome' approach.
Talks remain deadlocked
The United States wants to ensure Iran halts its nuclear programme, while Iran seeks to retain uranium enrichment technology, leaving a wide gap between the two sides. Speaking to reporters near Washington, Trump said, 'We have to open the Strait of Hormuz and it will open soon. We will give them one chance.'
He later attended a US Coast Guard event in Connecticut and again stressed that 'Iran must not have nuclear weapons.' Afterward, he told reporters, 'We need a 100% perfect answer. That way, we can save many lives.'
New proposal and mediation talks
Trump said on the 18th that he had postponed a strike scheduled for the following day, saying he was told by leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that there could be an 'acceptable deal.' He has repeatedly delayed strikes in the past.
Citing sources close to the negotiating team, Tasnim news agency, which is close to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, reported on the 20th that the United States sent a document through mediator Pakistan after Iran submitted a new 14-point proposal to Washington several days earlier.
Iran is reviewing the US document and has not yet responded. A Pakistani mediator in Tehran is coordinating efforts to align the content, it said.
Hints at continued diplomacy
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on social media on the 20th, saying, 'We have explored every means to avoid war, and all paths remain open on our side. Diplomacy based on mutual respect is far wiser, safer and more sustainable than war.'
Pezeshkian met on the same day with Pakistani Interior Minister Naqvi, who is visiting Iran. According to state-run English-language broadcaster Press TV, Iran has indicated it would be prepared to reach an agreement if the United States guarantees a permanent end to hostilities and lifts sanctions and other measures.
