ChatGPT Launches Financial Account Linking in the U.S.
OpenAI has begun rolling out a feature for its conversational AI service ChatGPT that allows users to link account data from U.S. financial institutions, including banks and brokerages. The service is available to subscribers to its $200-a-month Pro plan. It could make advice on household finances and asset building more personalized, while raising concerns over data security.
Links to More Than 12,000 Financial Institutions
The feature uses Plaid, a service that connects financial account data. OpenAI said it can link to more than 12,000 financial institutions, including banks, brokerages and credit card companies.
More than 200 million people use ChatGPT each month to ask about household finances, budgets and investments, according to OpenAI. Until now, users had to share their financial data manually to receive advice tailored to their circumstances. With the new feature, linked account data is synchronized automatically, allowing users to view spending, assets, subscriptions and upcoming payments in charts and tables. It is also expected to make it easier to seek advice on household budget reviews, investments and home purchases.
Data Leak Risks Draw Scrutiny
OpenAI said ChatGPT’s advice is intended to support users’ decision-making and does not constitute advice from a financial professional. The company is also considering features that would allow users to apply for credit cards or book appointments with tax professionals through ChatGPT.
OpenAI has not disclosed when the feature will be launched outside the United States. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, which has a business partnership with OpenAI, said in November 2025 that it was considering linking data between its app and ChatGPT.
Conversational AI services carry risks that information entered by users could be used unintentionally for training or accessed by third parties, leading to data leaks. The addition of financial account links could heighten the risk of exposure of highly sensitive personal information. OpenAI said users can control whether chat data is used for training, and that data obtained through linked accounts will be fully deleted from its systems within 30 days after the connection is removed.
In Japan, Money Forward, a major household accounting app provider, said on the 1st that some user information had been leaked following unauthorized access to a development support tool. Some account-linking functions remain suspended.
