Lai Urges U.S. to Continue Arms Sales to Taiwan
Arms Sales to Taiwan
On the 17th, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te called on the United States to continue selling arms to Taiwan. He posted on Facebook that this is necessary to protect regional peace. He criticized China for continuing its military buildup in pursuit of unification with Taiwan.
Uncertainty Over U.S. Support
In an interview aired on FOX News on the 15th, U.S. President Trump said he would decide on arms sales to Taiwan depending on China’s response. As the outlook for U.S. defense support for Taiwan becomes uncertain, Lai stressed that Taiwan-U.S. cooperation is an important factor in safeguarding regional peace and stability.
Advocates the Status Quo
Lai said that Taiwan seeks to maintain the status quo and that there is no issue of "Taiwan independence." He further accused China, which has been intensifying its military activities, of destroying peace. He noted that not only Taiwan, but also countries in the Indo-Pacific region, face threats from China.
