Todai May Festival Cancels 16th Events
The student group running the University of Tokyo’s spring festival, the May Festival, canceled all events on the 16th after a bomb threat was made against the Hongo Campus in Bunkyo, Tokyo. A lecture by Sanseito leader Sohei Kamiya was scheduled, and according to the Honda Police Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, a message threatening to kill Mr. Kamiya was sent to the May Festival website on the morning of the same day.
Festival to Continue on the 17th, With Stronger Safety Measures
The May Festival had been scheduled for May 16 to 17. On the evening of the 16th, the organizing group announced on its official website that, after confirming campus safety, it would hold the festival as planned on the 17th. In addition to stepping up nighttime security, bag checks will be conducted at entry.
Argument in Hallway Before Kamiya’s Talk
Kamiya’s lecture was set to begin at noon on the 16th, and a panel discussion with the political club hosting it was also planned. According to attendees, people opposed to the lecture blocked a hallway in front of the venue, leading to an argument.
