Sony Semiconductor to Consider Joint Venture with TSMC

Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the semiconductor subsidiary of Sony Group, announced on the 8th that it will consider establishing a joint venture subsidiary with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The two sides also reached a basic agreement to cooperate in the production and development of next-generation image sensors.

Collaboration for Physical AI

The joint venture will be majority-owned by Sony. Its establishment will be contingent on the signing of a final agreement and other conditions. Aiming at applications for "Physical AI," in which artificial intelligence (AI) handles the control of robots and automobiles, the two companies will deepen cooperation in development and manufacturing.

President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said at the earnings briefing on the same day, "We aim to establish a foundation for future technological innovation and further technological advancement."

Production Line Under Consideration Inside Kumamoto Plant

The joint venture will consider a plan to set up a production line inside Sony's image sensor factory in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It said it would discuss the details of new investment on the premise of support from the Japanese government.
